Brussels, 22nd of October, 2024. Today, 13 EU Member States gathered inBrussels as part of the European Biomethane Week to exchange best practices and collaborate on the growth of the biomethane sector. Participating country included Czech Republic, Denmark, Flanders, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Slovakia.
The event began with a workshop at the European Commission’s Charlemagne Building, where Member States discussed the latest updates to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). This was followed by a presentation from Denmark, which showcased best practices for addressing methane leakages in the production of biomethane.
Further discussions focused on national support schemes for biomethane, with participants sharing updates on their respective plans.
One key topic was the Task Force 2’s draft study on how EU member states draw up national emission inventories following IPCC Guidelines and how this may constitute a barrier for cross-border trade of biomethane.
The workshop also included a visit to the Biométhane du Bois d’Arnelle (BBA) biomethane plant in Les Bons Villers. Member States were joined by representatives from the European Commission Secretariat-General, DG ENER, DG CLIMA and DG AGRI to witness biomethane production firsthand. BBA is a facility dedicated to producing and injecting biomethane into the grid from agricultural and agri-food waste. The plant, which began operations in August 2021, produces approximately 500 Nm³/h of biomethane, or about 48,000 MWh per year, as well as digestate.
