Task Force 6 shared insights at the 19th Energy Community Gas Forum

Brussels, 17th of September, 2024. During the 19th Energy Community Gas Forum, dedicated to key developments in decarbonising the gas sector in the region, including EU-Ukraine collaboration in biomethane, Davide Rubini, co-chair of Task Force 6 on Ukraine, shared insights from our task force alongside a distinguished panel featuring Ms. Karolina Čegir (Energy Community Secretariat), Ms. Marina Delegán (British Embassy in Vienna), Mr. Georgii Geletukha (Bioenergy Association of Ukraine), and Ms. Hanna Zamazieieva (SAEE).

Key takeaways included:

  • The BIP is now a well-established platform advancing the debate on biomethane’s future in Europe, with a focus on finding pragmatic solutions to incumbent challenges.
  • With the amendment to the natural gas export ban, exporting biomethane from Ukraine via pipeline is a concrete opportunity, though operational challenges remain which all parties are committed to resolving.
  • Regulatory uncertainty continues to be the biggest obstacle, not only for export potential but also for laying the foundation for future domestic consumption.

The Energy Community is willing to continue facilitating dialogue and collaboration between the EU, contracting parties, and Ukrainian institutional stakeholders.
