Brussels, 18th of July, 2024. The Biomethane Industrial Partnership is thrilled to announce its hosting of the launch of the Task Force 5.2 report, titled “Novel Technology and Research Needs to Improve and Enable Enhanced Digestate Valorisation”, during the fifth edition of the ESNI Conference, “Growing the Future of Nutrient Recycling”.
The ESNI Conference, a key event in the nutrient recycling sector, will be held on the 18th and 19th of September in Brussels, with the BIP event taking place on the 18th of September, at Ateliers des Tanneurs, Brussels. The BIP event will feature a plenary session from 14:35 to 15:00, followed by a parallel session from 16:00 to 17:30.
The Task Force 5.2 report focuses on leveraging research and innovation to enhance the transformation of nutrients and compounds present after the anaerobic digestion process in various waste-based substrates and biomasses (i.e., digestate) into plant-available mineral forms of NPK, energy sources, and value-added products with broad applications in several industrial sectors.
The report provides a comprehensive review of the current state of digestate and EU legislation and digestate processing methods (such as solid-liquid separation and liquid and solid phase treatments). It identifies gaps in existing technology (including NPK extraction, other valuable compound extraction, microbial valorisation, cross-sectorial use, and improved digestate quality) and recommends future research and innovation activities. These recommendations consider factors like technology maturity, market readiness, environmental impact, and policy.
As with every edition, the ESNI conference will bring together leading experts in the field of nutrient recycling to foster collaboration among European entities engaged in nutrient recycling, exchanging valuable experiences and identifying knowledge gaps to guide future research.
